The award-nominated actor Diane Ladd, a Hollywood veteran passed away 89 years old.
This star, whose roles spanned Chinatown, passed away at home in California’s Ojai. This announcement was revealed through a message by her offspring, Oscar-winning actor Laura Dern.
Dern, who appeared with her mom in a number of films such as Wild at Heart, described her as “my wonderful hero and my special gift as a mother”, writing that she was by her side when she passed.
“She was the most wonderful daughter, mother, grandmother, performer, creative and caring individual that felt like a dream come true,” she wrote. “We were lucky to have her. She is flying with her angels now.”
The start of her career featured supporting roles in television programs such as Perry Mason while the seventies saw her starring next to the legendary Jack Nicholson in the film Chinatown.
During that year, 1974, she performed with actress Ellen Burstyn in Scorsese’s praised dramatic comedy Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore, a classic. Her acting brought Ladd her initial Oscar nod in the supporting actress category.
Throughout the 1980s, she was seen in the dramatic film the movie Black Widow and humorous film Christmas Vacation and also took part in the show Alice, a comedy program derived from her earlier movie.
In the subsequent decade, she received an additional Oscar nomination for supporting actress Oscar nomination for her performance in David Lynch’s Wild at Heart, a cult classic where she played the parent of her biological child Laura Dern’s role. The following year she obtained a further nomination for her performance in the film Rambling Rose which also starred her daughter.
“This was the picture that the late Princess Diana chose as her absolutely favorite, and she flew Laura and I to London for a special screening and a celebration in our honor,” Ladd said about the film Rambling Rose. “She positioned herself between us, holding both our hands, and weeping, watching us perform.”
The 1990s also saw roles in comedy The Cemetery Club bringing her back with Burstyn, Primary Colors, a political comedy, starring John Travolta and Payne’s the movie Citizen Ruth where she played Dern’s mother once more. The decade also earned her TV award nominations for roles in Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman, the show Grace Under Fire plus Touched by an Angel.
She kept appearing with Laura Dern in comedy drama the film Daddy and Them, Lynch’s the movie Inland Empire and White’s satirical show the program Enlightened. She was also seen alongside Sandra Bullock in 28 Days, a movie, Anthony Hopkins in that movie and with Jennifer Lawrence in Joy.
Subsequent TV appearances consisted of Ray Donovan and Young Sheldon.
Ladd also wrote and helmed the humorous movie the movie Mrs Munck featuring Diane Ladd and former husband Bruce Dern. “Bruce is an excellent performer,” she noted. “I was honored to direct him in a movie. In fact, I am the sole female in recorded history who directed her former husband. I humorously say: ‘I say ladies, if you want revenge, direct your ex-husband.’ But I’m only kidding.”
She was additionally the third cousin of the great Tennessee Williams, who she referred to as “a significant impact in my life”.
In 2018, Ladd was misdiagnosed with lung disease and advised her life expectancy was six months yet she recovered completely after her daughter moved her to a different hospital.
“If you can take your pain and not let it back up similar to a wound, instead apply it to explore, to make the path clearer for personal and collective growth, then you are succeeding,” Ladd said.
