Chernobyl Disaster Containment Structure Can No Longer Effectively Blocks Harmful Radiation, Requires Significant Repair – International Atomic Energy Agency

The protective shield encasing the Chornobyl nuclear reactor within Ukraine can no longer perform its primary safety function of blocking radiation, as announced by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). This loss of function comes after a drone attack in February that blew a hole in the structure.

Structural Compromise from Drone Strike Degrades Containment Structure

An attack by an unmanned aerial vehicle in February caused a breach in the so-called “new safe confinement” structure. This enormous protective structure, built at a cost of €1.5bn with work finishing in 2019, was designed to contain radiation for decades. A recent IAEA assessment mission found that the strike had degraded the integrity of the steel confinement.

The containment arch's main safety functions, such as confinement, are no longer operational, said IAEA director general Rafael Grossi. Grossi noted that the mission confirmed no permanent damage to key support structures or sensor systems.

The initial 1986 explosion at the Chernobyl plant – which occurred when Ukraine was a republic within the Soviet Union – released radioactive fallout across Europe. Although limited repairs have been carried out, agency officials stressed that comprehensive restoration is essential. This is needed to stop additional deterioration and to ensure long-term nuclear safety. Officials in Ukraine previously reported that a drone carrying a high-explosive warhead struck the plant, igniting a blaze and damaging the outer shielding.
