Finland Stuns Two-Time Defending Title Holders the United States in U20 World Championship Quarterfinal Round.

Finland's Arttu Välilä scored the decisive goal at two minutes and eleven seconds of overtime as Finland engineered a remarkable 4-3 victory over the reigning two-time champion American team on Friday night in the world junior hockey last eight.

"Got to give credit to the United States," stated Finnish captain Aron Kiviharju. "That's a fantastic squad, full of great individuals and a superbly organized team. But I mentioned we wanted that revenge from last year, and I think we truly deserved it tonight."

In the semi-finals on Sunday, the Finns will take on Sweden, while Canada will meet Czechia. Sweden defeated the Latvian side six to three, Canada had a first-period five-goal outburst in a 7-1 romp over the Slovakian team, and the Czechs overcame Switzerland by a six to two margin.

Dramatic Third Period and Extra Session

The Michigan State Spartan Lee Ryker tied it for the United States with one minute and thirty-three seconds remaining in regulation and the University of Notre Dame netminder N. Kempf pulled for an additional skater.

L. Tuuva and J. Saarelainen scored in a fifty-five-second burst in the third period to give their team a two to one lead. He tied it at 2 with seven minutes and seventeen seconds to go, then set up his teammate's go-ahead goal with six minutes and twenty-two seconds on the clock. J. Saarelainen also earned a helper on the first goal.

Notable Performances and Reactions

The Boston University defenseman Cole Hutson had a goal and an assist for the Americans after being struck in the head against the Swiss and sitting out two games.

"I thought we executed well for most of the game," Hutson commented. "But the small details that they got, many of their high-quality chances came from our errors."

His university colleague Cole Eiserman gave the U.S. a 2-1 edge on a power play with nine minutes and forty-five seconds left in the second period. He took a feed from Hutson and fooled the Finnish goaltender with a quick shot from the right circle.

Hutson tallied on a rush 35 seconds into the second period. H. Ruohonen tied it at four minutes and forty-six seconds on a snap shot from the left side.

The Americans fell in their last two games – losing six to three to the Swedes on Wednesday in the final preliminary game – after winning their first three.

"It has been an privilege to lead this team," said the team's coach. "They played a great game tonight and fell just a bit short. All credit to the Finns. It's an empty emotion right now, but our guys left everything on the ice."

In the second match in the host city, the Canadian team overwhelmed Slovakia with the five-goal first.

C. Reschny, T. Iginla, Michael Misa, Sam O’Reilly and Brady Martin scored in the first period, and Porter Martone and Cole Beaudoin scored in the second. J. Ivankovic turned aside twenty-one shots.

"Just goes to show how powerful we can be," Martin said. "Taking a five-nothing advantage, it kind of kills their morale."

In the first quarter-final, A. Frondell scored twice for Team Sweden against Latvia. The defender L. Sahlin Wallenius had a goal and two helpers to aid the Swedes remain undefeated in their five outings.

In Minneapolis T. Galvas, Samuel Drancak, Adam Jiricek, P. Sikora, J. Klima and J. Fibigr provided the goals for the Czech team.

Relegation Game Result

The German team triumphed in the consolation match, defeating Denmark eight to four. M. Schams scored twice to ensure Germany retain its spot next year in the top division. The Danish side was relegated to the second tier.
