New Year's Revelers Urged to Wrap Up Warm with Wintry Weather Forecast Throughout the UK

Weather experts have indicated a chilly start to the new year, with snowfall anticipated across much of the UK. Revelers are advised to bundle up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.

Hogmanay Celebrations Go Ahead In Spite of Alerts

The Scottish capital's famous Hogmanay events are set to go ahead, a contrast to last year's cancellation. This comes despite weather alerts for snow across northern Scotland.

"An icy New Year's Eve night for those partying, so extra layers will be necessary," stated the weather service.

Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies

Across the UK, the weather is expected to be suited to fireworks celebrations, with a lack of precipitation and open skies. Readings are expected to be cold, meaning extra layers essential, according to forecasters.

To the north, skies will be more overcast, but this is not anticipated to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "We are not looking at low cloud, mist or murk, so you should be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.

Widespread Weather Alerts for New Year's Day

As we enter Friday, advisories have been issued across Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, across parts of the north-west, the West Midlands and all the way to London and the majority of the south-east of England.

• People have been urged to leave additional time for journeys on the road.
• Hold-ups and call-offs are expected on public transport.

Temperatures Expected to Drop Further

With the start of 2026, it will be "frosty everywhere where you are," stated forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as wintry showers and strong winds are expected to affect the north of the country.

Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have built up in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the top roads and uplands.

Public Health Advisories Issued

At the same time, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are due to remain in place until noon on 5 January, with temperatures forecast to fall to between 3C and 5C.

The health agency explained this meant the weather could to lead to notable consequences across the NHS and care systems. This includes a potential rise in the number of deaths among vulnerable individuals or those in the older age groups.
