Heads Up: This discussion reveals crucial plot points for the concluding episodes.

Unearthing the Secrets of the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the psychic realm known as Camazotz, Max reveals she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a young, eight-year-old Henry encounter an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. It was a factor, but the trauma involved more than a fight for life.

Like many elements in volume 2, the full story behind the encounter was first explored the stage play the prequel play.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a warship into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who came back in a vegetative state with an different blood composition.

The captain's son, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker took experimental components to hand over to the Russian agents, who were desperate to launch their version of the tests. That traitor in the tunnel is that employee.

Unlocking the Mystery

Given what is revealed about Brenner's work, the briefcase would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon handling the contents, leading to the awakening of his powers—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the box could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later fundamentally changed. Throughout the play, he struggles with the whispers of a sinister presence, similar to how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in the past.

A Weaponized Emotion

Henry's enduring terror of that cave demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. Even as he orchestrates the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him still exists. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a climactic battle between the monster and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to fortify himself.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale ahead.
